I was searching for an easy DIY centre piece for my dining room table. I found this really nice but needed attention wooden tray at the thrift store for $5 and thought that would look nice as a centre piece. I brought it home but sadly it sat on my table for weeks as I pondered what to do. After searching on pintrest I found exactly what to do with my lonely looking tray. I was going to spray paint mason jars and use dried out flowers from my garden. So all I needed was 3 mason jars, some spray paint and most importantly my crafty mom to help complete the project.
My mom arrived a day or two later and voila our project started.
Here is a step by step look at our easy DIY centre piece:
Step one: I picked hydrangeas from my garden and hung them to dry for a few days in my garage (yes I hung them off my lawnmower but it worked).

Step two: I found 3 large mason jars from the thrift store (although I’ve seen them at dollarama for the same price) and washed each one and dried them.

Step three: wash and dry wooden tray (sorry I have no before pic of the tray but it was brown and in need of some tlc).
Step four: purchased spray paint from Michaels. Let the spray painting begin. My mom set up shop in my garage/driveway using styrofoam and a cardboard box plus a mask for when she was spraying.

We used the following colours:
- Silver matte colour for the tray (sorry no before and after pic of the tray)
- White matte colour for two of the mason jars
- Bordeaux matte colour for the middle mason jar
- Mix of the above colours for the hydrangeas plus metallic

Note: spray from a little distance and start of with a light spray to see how much is required. The tray and jars took 2 coats.
We left it for about an hour to completely dry and then we assembled our centre piece. I am so pleased with the colours and how it turned out.
The best part, I can change the colours any time and/or dress it up with some accessories on the tray.
Total cost: $10, now that’s a bargain, woohoo!
Note: cost of spray paint was $20 but it will last a ton of projects.
